A celebration of life will be held 11:00AM Thursday September 17 at Crestwood Memorial Chapel for William "Roger" Yancey, age 64, Gadsden, who died Monday September 14, 2009. Revs. Rick Willis and Shane Cornutt will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home is in charge.
Roger had retired from Republic Steel, having worked for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Gadsden High School and Jacksonville State University. He was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, having served in many capacities. In his own words, he described himself: "I am a child of God, saved by grace, not by works; retired from the steel industry, an artist, singer, song writer of story songs, proud parent and grandparent." He is preceded in death by his wife Doris (Aldridge) Yancey, and his parents William Samuel and Amanda Inez Yancey.
He is survived by a son, William "Clay" Yancey; Daughter Laura (Shane) Cornutt; longtime companion Margaret Moon Adams; Grandchildren Ella Ann Cornutt, John Cooper Cornutt, Jadon O'Bryant, Brooklyn Gilleland, Bailey Gilleland; Chosen Daughters Jessica (David) O'Bryant and Samantha (David) Gilleland; Sister Bebe (Sammy) Andrews; Brother in Law Jim (Martha) Aldridge; Nieces Lynn Aldridge and Robin Lomenick; Nephews Thad, Jake Aldridge, Ben Andrews, and Matt Andrews; Aunts Willene Smith, Jackie Brown, Mattie Jo Atchison and Faye (Dallas) Battles; and a host of Cousins.
In Lieu of Flowers Memorials may be made to Bellevue Baptist Church
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5 until 7pm.
