Funeral Services for William Gartman will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Crestwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

William Gartman was born on July 16, 1951, to Willie and Joseph Gartman. He was the youngest of six children. The family welcomed three daughters first—JoAnn, Joyce, and Barbara—followed by three sons, Calvin, Edward, and William.

William and his brothers were very close and spent many years playing sports together. William loved every sport and played baseball, basketball, and football while attending high school. After going to work at Goodyear, he continued his love of sports by playing on the men’s softball team for many years, as well as on a golf team. He was a natural athlete and enjoyed being active and competing.

After graduating from Southside High School, William proudly served in the military, including time in Vietnam. During his service, he earned two awards as a sharpshooter and was awarded the Bronze Star.

William was the proud father of one daughter, Dixie, and grandfather to two grandchildren, Honesty and Joshua.

After retirement, William enjoyed spending time at the VFW, where he loved singing karaoke. He also spent many Sunday afternoons singing karaoke with a large circle of friends.

William’s life had many peaks and valleys, but through it all, his love for Jesus remained strong. He enjoyed studying the Bible and listening to Gospel music. He would always close his karaoke sessions by singing a Christian song.

William’s final statement on Wednesday, August 2nd, was, “I’m tired of this suffering. I am ready to go be with the Lord.”

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ed Curtner for caring for his brother during the past four months, bringing him food each day and making countless trips to doctors’ appointments and hospitals. His love and devotion to his brother will never be forgotten.

“He ain’t heavy, he is my Brother.”
