Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Crestwood Chapel for Mrs. Vera Pearl Elrod, 99, Trussville, formerly of Gadsden, who passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge of services.
Vera grew up on a farm in Arab and cherished those memories all her life. She lived in Gadsden most of her adult life, where she worked multiple jobs to make sure her daughter Vivian enjoyed all the niceties of a young girl and teenager. Vera always assumed the role of caretaker as she helped care for her grandchildren, her sick brother Grady, and her friend Edna Earl Wilder. She loved working in the garden and watching things grow. In her later years, she would always say, "I've worked hard but had a good life." The best compliment you could pay Vera was to acknowledge how hard she worked.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Elrod; grandson, Chad Gober; brothers, Grady Skelton, Glen Skelton; and sister in-law, Sara Skelton.
She is survived by daughter, Vivian (Garry) Wilder; granddaughter, Kristin (Peyton) Riggins; and grandson, Bradley Wilder and his girlfriend, Katie Parrish.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service Friday.
