Obituary

Funeral services for Sylvia McIntosh Smith, 88, of Gadsden, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Crestwood Chapel. Mrs. Smith passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026. Bro. Tommy Marshall will officiate the service, and entombment will follow at Forrest Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith family.

Sylvia was born in Dallas, Georgia, and later moved with her family to Gadsden, Alabama, where she was raised and attended school. She graduated from Gadsden High School in 1955 and from the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital School of Nursing in 1959.

Following her graduation, Sylvia traveled with her former husband's naval career and served in several hospitals throughout the years. She eventually returned to Gadsden, where she devoted decades of compassionate service as a registered nurse at Riverview Regional Medical Center, formerly Holy Name of Jesus Hospital. It was fitting that the hospital where her nursing career began was also where she peacefully met her Lord and Savior on Friday.

Sylvia was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and faithfully served Him. She was a longtime member of North Gadsden Baptist Church and greatly enjoyed worshiping there until declining health prevented her from attending.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Andrew McIntosh and Daisy Lucille McIntosh; her son, Michael Smith; her sister and brother-in-law, Dora Lee and Marvin Murray; and her sister-in-law, Joan McIntosh.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Jimmy Smith; her sister, Sally McIntosh; her brother, William McIntosh; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to North Gadsden Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the nursing staff of Riverview Regional Medical Center and Sylvia's many dear friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care, as well as the nursing staff of Northside Health Care for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Sylvia over the past several years.

The family will receive friends at Crestwood Chapel on Thursday from 12:00 noon until the hour of the service. There will be no graveside service.
