A Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Friday July 1 at Stowers Hill Baptist Church for Stephen William Legat, age 86, Attalla, AL who died Sunday June 26, 2011. Rev. Richard Bradfield will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Legat is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Eloise Gilchrist, sister Elizabeth Muha, brothers John Legat and Andrew Legat, and his mother in law Ruby Gilchrist.
He was the son of John Legat and Elizabeth Petrofczik, who had come to America from Slatvina, Slovakia. He served in the Army during World War II, and met his wife at Camp Sibert, Alabama. He moved to Alabama after the War and married and settled in Attalla. He worked as a bookkeeper many years for Republic Steel. He joined Pleasant Valley Church, where he was active as a deacon and treasurer, and later served at Stowers Hill Baptist Church. He loved his family, gardening, fly fishing, and all other outdoor activities. He was a good friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his son Stephen Greg Legat; daughter in law Jo Anne Legat; grandsons Ian and Joey Legat, of Attalla; niece Kathy Legat and nephew Andy Leget of Johnstown, PA; and special son Dr. Tommy Simpson of Rome, GA.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stowers Hill Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service
