Funeral Service will be at 3pm, Sunday September 24, 2023, at Crestwood Chapel for Shirley M. Hughes, age 88, of Gadsden. Shirley passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Rev. Chris Walker will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home will direct services.
Shirley was a graduate of Emma Sansom High School, class of 1953, and Holy Name of Jesus School of Nursing, class of 1956. She was a Registered Nurse and worked with Baptist Memorial Hospital (now Gadsden Regional Medical Center) until retirement. Shirley was an active member of Riverbend Baptist Church until health issues prevented her from attending. She was also very active with civic organizations such as the Pilot Club of Alabama and the Alabama Head Injury Gadsden Chapter.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Ruby Hughes, brother Robert (Buck) Hughes and sister in law Rose Hughes.
Left to cherish her memory are her nephew Chris (Donna) Walker, niece Terry (Sonny) Conn, great niece Kristen (Doug) Fuhrman (Laney and Grant), and great nephew Drew Carlson.
Her nephews will serve as pallbearers
Honorary pallbearers are the members, past and present, of the Pilot Club of Gadsden; the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice, and Evelyn Westcott.

Shirley lived a long and meaningful life and when she left this world she RAN straight into the arms of Jesus. She was a precious lady that gave to everyone she met and she never met a stranger. She loved her family and gave us many wonderful memories to remember her by. We already miss her but will see her again one day in Heaven.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
