Sarah Agnes Williams (Mitchell, Cooke), 94, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Crestwood Cemetery, 2209 E. Broad St., Gadsden, AL, Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. with visitation from 11 a.m. preceding the service. Burial will follow at Crestwood.
Mrs. Mitchell was born in Obion County, TN, to Claude and Love Williams. She graduated from Lexington High School and attended UT Martin as well as business school.
Mrs. Mitchell moved to Gadsden in 1951 and resided on Raley Street in East Gadsden and on Meighan Boulevard in West Gadsden. Her life was very rich in faith and family. She participated actively in the ministries and programs at East Gadsden Baptist Church and Cherry Street Baptist Church. She worked and volunteered at Gadsden Regional Hospital. She was known for bringing food and comfort to those with illness and loss. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her home was the place where family memories were made, as eventually four generations gathered there in joy and love. Sarah and Tiny were available to help whenever needed, whether to nurse grandchildren or teach them to fish. Her famous chocolate cake and chocolate pie recipes, which she had from her mother, can be duplicated but never seem to taste quite the same.
Sarah was predeceased by her first husband, Landon H. Cooke Sr.; her second husband, Tiny J. Mitchell, both of Gadsden; her brother, Charles A. Williams of Paducah, KY; and niece, Dr. Gaye Williams of Orcas Island, WA.
She is survived by her sister, Doris Milner, of South Fulton TN; sisters-in-law, Ruth W. Williams, Paducah, KY; Billie Mitchell, Glencoe, AL; children, Landon Cooke (Carolyn) of Cold Water, MS; Linda Sheikh (Muzaffar) of Vestavia Hills, AL; Margarette Fuhrman (the Rev. Larry) of Rainbow City, AL; Priscilla Stephenson (Michael) of Concord, NC; her grandchildren, Colin Cooke (Amy), Brentwood, TN; Stephanie Cochran (Craig), Alamo, TN; Natalie Wroten (Randy), Belleville, IL; Angela Wilkes (Brian), Olive Branch, MS; Brent Fuhrman (Stephanie), Homewood, AL; Doug Fuhrman (Beth), Montgomery, AL; Dr. Stacey Gilbert (Dr. Shawn), Mountain Brook, AL; Kregg Stephenson (Monica), Durham, NC; Qasim Sheikh (Rachel McBee), Winchester, TN; Shan Sheikh (Lindsay), Birmingham, AL; Jamal Sheikh (Dr. Emily), Hoover, AL; and 18 great-grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews including, Michael Milner (Gigi), Fulton, KY; Robin Bradshaw (Ken), Paducah, KY; Kathy Felts (Pete), Paducah, KY; Robert Burrow (Barbara), Morganfield, KY; Charles E. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Rittenhouse Senior Living, Hoover, and St. Martin's in the Pines, Birmingham, for their excellent, loving care of Sarah during the last three years. Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering at either church mentioned above.
