September 5, 1927 – July 24, 2022
Robert Loui Pope ,Sr. (Bobby) 94, of Gadsden Alabama, entered his heavenly home on July 24, 2022. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Crestwood Cemetery. The service will be held by The Reverend Bill Smith.
Bobby was a lifelong resident of Gadsden, graduating from Gadsden High School in 1947. He served in The United States Navy in the Asiatic Pacific American area. On return from the war, he married the love of his life, Faye Robertson. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gadsden. As a young adult, he was the owner of Pope Pick and Tote in East Gadsden. Most of his adult life was spent employed at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company Warehouse, retiring after 36 years of loyal service. As a founding member of Bow Hunters of Alabama, he lobbied at the state Capital for archery season establishment in Alabama in the 1960s. He was competitive in archery and held first place in numerous archery tournaments. He had a passion for hunting and golf. Bobby was a member of Goodyear/River Trace Golf Club and later in life at Twin Bridges Golf Club. He was an avid Alabama Football fan and loved watching old westerns.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Frances Pope, his wife, Faye Pope, sister Jane Clayton, grandson, John Brothers.
He is survived by his children; Bonnie Brothers, Bobby (Penny) Pope, Michael (Rhonda) Pope; grandchildren Will (Angie) Brothers, Wesley(Ashley) Brothers, Jessica (Rhett) Walker, Anna (Nick) Wheeler, Macie Pope; great grandchildren Laney Brothers, Ethan Brothers, Bryce, Emma, and Reagan Wheeler, Mac and Griff Walker; niece Becky (David) Miller; nephew Wesley Strain and best friends Johnny Wetzel and Hal Davidson.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Ethel Carson and Bri Moten for the excellent care he received. An additional thank you goes to Cherokee Village Assisted living, Cherokee Home Health and ProHealth Hospice for the compassionate care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to First Baptist Church of Center building fund.
