Opal Ford Mayo age 90 passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. Funeral service will be Friday February 13, 2015 at Crestwood Chapel. Reverend Kevin Lewis will be officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge.
Opal was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Harold T. Mayo. Several years later she was blessed to have married Thomas Morgan who is now deceased. Many times she would say how God had blessed her with two good husbands. Son, Danny Mayo, Parents Newt and Susan Ford, brother Carl and Curtis Ford, Sister Jewel Higgins, sisters-in-law Louise Ford and Marie Cargal, and brothers-in-law Clarence Higgins and Charles Cargal.
Survivors are Beth (James) Snead, grandchildren, Aimee Mayo (Chris) Lindsey, Vanessa (Walt) Lynch, Cory Mayo, Blake (Crissy) Snead, great grandchildren, Levi, Oscar, Opal, Magnolia (Lola), and Truman Lindsey, Isabella and Walter Lynch, Lilly and Jamison Snead.
Pallbearers will be nephews Ronald Higgins, Walter Ford, Chris Robinson, Chuck Cargal and Keith Cargal. Friends Gary Entrekin, Connie Entrekin and John Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are John Sharpton, Gene Sharpton and Mike Haney. Thank you to all her longtime neighbors on Knight Drive, Opal was able to live by herself for the care and love shown to her. A special thank you to Gentiva Hospice who has supported Opal and her family for the past two years, especially Rod Stephens and Tina Amberson who have shown us love, strength and compassion during this time allowing Opal to be at home with her daughter Beth, Chaplain Richard Bradford for his reading, praying and singing to Opal. A special thank you to Brenda Copeland for coming and staying with Opal many times giving us the opportunity to have a rest. Thank you Laura Mckenzie for making my Mother beautiful for the final time.
Opal was a member of 12th Street Baptist Church, Francess Wright Sunday School, Elliott Senior Club and Tuesday Bridge Club. Opal was retired from Life and Casualty Insurance Company and worked at Camp Sibert during the war. Opal was in the video This One's for the Girls with her granddaughter Aimee, and loved to talk about the experience of filming the video.
Nothing pleased Opal more than to cook and entertain friends in her home. Many times she would bake cakes or take food to her friends or people who could not leave their home for one reason or another. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be given to Stop Hunger Now, what great tribute to someone who loved to prepare food for others to supply meals to fight hunger around the world. Donations may be sent to Life Church, 4545 Rainbow Drive, Rainbow City, AL 35906: make checks payable to Life Church. Last year Life Church packed and supplied 20,000 meals to the hungry around the world.
The family will receive friends from 12-2 on Friday.
