Funeral Service will be at 11AM Saturday, July 17, at Crestwood Chapel for Ola Lee Lawson Hamil, of Gadsden, who died July 13, 2010. Rev. Jay Stewart will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct service.
Ola Lee Lawson Hamil was born on April 2, 1909 in Mississippi and then moved to Alabama City as a young woman of 20 years, with her family in 1929. She married virgil Lee Hamil (deceased). For 30 years Mrs. Hamil was the proprietor of the day care facility located near Dwight Manufacturing Cotton Mill. This was the first licensed day care in Etowah County and was housed in the Howard Gardner Nichols Memorial Library. In order to preserve the historic library/day care building arrangements were made for it to to be sold to the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society after her retirement. At the age of 63 she learned to drive and became a busy volunteer in the community. She was one of the original Green Thumb volunteer workers. She volunteered for RSVP and the Gadsden Museum of Art. She served as librarian for the Northeast Genealogical Society. She became manager of the Etowah Baptist Association's Hopkins Mission, she was a member of the Etowah County Health Department Council. Mrs. Hamil was a very active member of Dwight Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School, was Sunday School Secretary, and director of the church library. She was employed by Anchor, which became First Call for Help division of United Way. At age 87 she retired from her position as information and referral specialist.
She is survived by her sons Gary Hamil and Douglas Hamil; daughter in law Sherrie Hamil; grandchildren Sharon Hamil, Shannon (Tom) Zaninovich, Anna Hamil, Jubal (Tray) Hamil, Joshua (Carrie) Hamil, Jacob Hamil; Great Grandchildren Keenan Zaninovich, Georgia Zaninovich, Lawson Hamil, WalterHamil, Samantha Hamil, Lally Rose Hamil, and Elias Hamil; brother Hilton Lawson (Josephine), and several nieces and nephews.
