Funeral services will be at 1pm Saturday at Crestwood Chapel for Mrs. Nell Sue Phillips Herring age 84, of Gardendale, formerly of Hokes Bluff. Mrs. Herring went to be with her Lord Sunday, September 11, 2011 after a long, courageous eight year battle with cancer. Reverends L. Dale Butler and Ken Herring will officiate. Burial will be in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Herring was born and reared in Southside, AI. A retiree of the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Gadsden, she was a member of Sandusky First Baptist Church in Birmingham, where she had resided for the past six years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was happiest when preparing a meal for her family or helping others. She truly had a servant's heart and leaves the legacy of a loving, caring spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.M. and Callie Berry Phillips; brothers, Clarence Phillips and Bud Phillips; sisters, Peggy Phillips, Catherine Ostrowski, Vickie Cole, and Mildred Graham; special nephew, Bobby Phillips.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Thomas W. Herring; son, Rev. Ken Herring (Helen) of Keystone Heights, FL; daughters, Peggy Morris (Kenn) of Greenville, SC and Debbie Thacker (Ricky) of Gardendale, AL; grandchildren Kelly Henderson (Mitchell), Greg Herring (Robyn), Amy Taylor-Winget (Phil), Stephanie Mullen (Rev. Paul), John Paul Morris, Jason Thomas Morris, Chris Thacker (Tracey), BenThacker, Jenny Pace (Brian), Laura Thacker; great-grandchildren Katie, Emily, and Jared Henderson, Ashley and Ally Herring, Josh and Daniel Taylor, Jessica, Jamie, Tommy, and Emily Mullen, Brandon andAshley Morris, Hannah Thacker, Ellyn Pace, and Gage Thacker; sisters, Jo Howell, Dean Anderson, Emma Whitten (Joel), Elsie McCain, Betty Hood (Jack), and Bonnie Phillips (Terry); a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-Iaw.
The family gives a special thanks to Mrs. Herring's wonderful doctors and nurses and especially to VITAS Hospice for their loving care and support. Also, the family wishes to thank their wonderful extended family and loving friends for their prayers and support through this difficult time.
The family will receive friends from 11am until 1pm Saturday at the funeral home
