Mildred Ruth Atkins passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 6, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved. She was 99 years old and a lifelong member of East Gadsden Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held at Crestwood Funeral Home on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 12 p.m. with a visitation starting at 10 a.m. until time of service.
She is survived by her daughter, Sondra Atkins Nunnally (Larry), and her son, Jackie Ray Atkins (Glenda); seven grandchildren, Kevin Nunnally (Marianne), Brandi Atkins Benefield (Scott), Amy Atkins Stephens, James Atkins (Lori), Paige Atkins Amos (Jay), Christian Atkins Scotz (Angelica), and Jarron Taylor Atkins (Brittany); ten great-grandchildren, Kara, Kyle, Courtney Atkins Elsea (Eddie), Christopher Wimpee, Jake, Nate, Baylor, Melody, Jackson, and Barron; and three great-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jordan, and Coraline.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, J.C. “Buck” Atkins; her sons Gerald Michael Atkins (and his wife Rhonda) and Gary Don Atkins; and her granddaughter Kristie Michelle Nunnally.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Amedisys Home Health and Mountain Cove Assisted Living for their devoted care, and to family friend Kenneth Hester, whose open door and generous spirit were a true comfort in Mildred’s final months.
