Mevolene Culberson Vassar (Maw Maw), 90, of Tuscaloosa (Formerly of Gadsden), went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 8:25 AM at Druid City Hospital. Services will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at Crestwood Funeral Home (Gadsden) with Pastor Darrell Brown officiating. Entombment will follow at Crestwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Morris W. Vassar; parents, Melvin and Marie Culberson; sisters, Faye Parnell, Ruth Harrison; and brother, F.M. Culberson.
Survivors include sons, Billy Vassar (Paula) of South Fulton, TN, and Kenneth Vassar (Bonnie) of Northport, AL; grandchildren, Tricia Vassar-Gingrich (Bryan) of Town and Country, MO, David Vassar (Courtney) of Murfreesboro, TN, Bryan Greer (Amy) of Trenton, TN, Marianne Fowler (Charlie) of Wingo, KY, Tessa Mitchell (Jason) of Montgomery, AL, Bret Isbell of Northport, AL; and several great-grandchildren.
Mevolene was born in Weogufka, AL on August 29, 1925. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years where she taught the Loyalty Sunday School Class. She received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Jacksonville State University and her Master's of Library Science degree from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Campus. She was a former member of the honorary teacher's sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa and taught in the Gadsden City School System for over 20 years. Mevolene was a devoted wife and mother and will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Pallbearers include Bryan Greer, Jason Mitchell, David Vassar, Charlie Fowler, Bryan Gingrich, and Mark Parnell.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Leonard Jones, staff of Pine Valley Retirement Community, and staff of Druid City Hospital, 6th Floor North Central. A very special thanks to devoted caregivers Shannon McIntyre, Shelby Johnson, Pat Fair and Ginger Lord.
