IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mattie Lee
Welch
December 20, 1942 – December 15, 2024
Mattie Hawkins Welch passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024. She was born in Crossville, AL on December 20, 1942, to Gordon and Annie Kate Hawkins.
Mattie was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Johnny Welch, her sister, Johnnie Ruth Mellon, and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-love Rita and Jaquay Burns and their grandchildren, Jackie Burns and John Burns. She is also survived by her siblings: Brothers Charlie (Wife Gladys) Hawkins and Billy (Wife Janell) Hawkins, and Sisters Dollie Gore, Zubbie Selvage, Wilma (Husband Reynoil) Davis. Also living to cherish her memory are her many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mattie graduated from Crossville High School in 1961. She and Johnny moved to the Tillison Bend Community soon after they married and lived there their entire married life. She was a gifted seamstress who also enjoyed crafts of all kinds. Additionally, she enjoyed gardening and kept her yard beautiful with flowers. She was a gentle soul who was loved by everyone who knew her. Most important to her was her relationship with the Lord and wanted her daughter, grandchildren and her extended family to know Him as she did. She was a member of Union #3 Baptist Church.
We take comfort in the fact that she is in the presence of her Savior with the hard journey of the last two years now in her past and completely insignificant in heaven. We offer a huge debt of gratitude to Caregiver Ashley Bishop, Gentiva Hospice, and Regency Pointe.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, December 18, from 10:00 – 12:00. A service of remembrance will follow with Dr. Steve Fain officiating. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home will direct the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Children's Building Fund at Union #3 Baptist Church, 8765 Centre Road, Gadsden, AL, 35903.
