Obituary

Mary E. Battles Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at Crestwood Chapel for Mary E. Battles, 95, Hokes Bluff, who died Monday, April 18, 2011. The Rev. Anthony Copeland will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct services. Mrs. Battles was a part of the Greatest Generation. She and her brother, Voiley Moore, survived the 1918 flu epidemic, which took the lives of her parents and other siblings. After the death of her parents, she was raised by her grandparents, whom she loved deeply. She was a charter member of Brierwood Hills Baptist Church and was most recently the oldest member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she touched countless people with her smile and dedication. She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa E. Battles; daughter, Melba Johnson; and grandson, Thomas Henderson. She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Henderson, Hokes Bluff; grandsons, Charles Barnett, Hokes Bluff, and Jimmy (Darlea) Henderson, Hokes Bluff; great-grandchildren, Carrie (Jerry) Works, Savannah, Ga., Dylan Henderson, Hokes Bluff, Matthew Henderson and Abigail Henderson, Hokes Bluff; great-great-grandchildren, Katie Works and Alex Works, Savannah, Ga. Pallbearers will be Charles Barnett, Jimmy Henderson, Dylan Henderson, Steve Fleming, Kenneth Means and Greg Walker. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Northside Healthcare. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
