Obituary

Marvin Bradley Self, age 78, of Gadsden, AL entered the gates of Heaven on Friday, February 18, 2022. Graveside services will be Sunday, February 20, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Crestwood Cemetery. Bill Drummons and Rick Hester will officiate.

Mr. Self was born on September 1, 1943. When God calls someone home, we usually read "date of birth – date of death." The dates are not important but the DASH is and Marvin did great things during his "dash" period. He had an adventurous spirit, loved to race motorcycles in his youth, was dashingly handsome, and only took three weeks to convince his wife Gloria to marry him. He always said she was his best investment. They were married 56 years.

Marvin graduated from the University of Alabama in 1965 and served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was a stock broker with the last small brokerage house in Gadsden, Seminole Investment Bankers Corp., and continued with Merrill Lynch for twenty years. He always said that he looked forward to going to work each day. After retirement, Marvin enjoyed working with his wife Gloria on the computer in what they called the "War Room" studying the market and trading some stocks.

Marvin was a member of Southside Baptist Church and especially enjoyed the Special Studies Sunday School class led by Joann Brown. He found special pleasure in his daily devotions and Bible study and loved to listen to Southern gospel music.

He struggled with his lack of vision and other health problems for numerous years but bravely faced them head on. Marvin had a kind and generous heart and was always proud of his daughters Sue, and Shay, his five grandchildren, and his great granddaughter. He enjoyed every success and milestone they accomplished; he hurt when they hurt, and prayed for them daily. He was their true champion and supporter.

Mr. Self was preceded in death by his parents Maxwell F. and Sarah E. Self, parents in law Bill and Doris Boyle, and son-in-law Cary Hefner.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; daughters Sue (David) Mixson of Madison, AL. and Shay Hefner of Southside; grandchildren Maddie (Russell) Cook, Madison AL; Drew (Wynne) Mixson, Auburn; John Hefner, Southside; Maxwell Hefner, Auburn; Ezekiel (Alexa) Hefner and great granddaughter Saige Hefner, Southside; sister Carol Teller, New Albany, MS; sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Gary Downey, Darren (Missy) Downey, Southside; Derrick (Stephanie) Downey, Dee Downey Pruitt; Henry Teller, Flagstaff, AZ; Sarah (Robert) Garrett, New Albany, MS; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be grandsons; Russell Cook, Drew Mixson, John Hefner, Maxwell Hefner, Ezekiel Hefner, and son-in-law David Mixson.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Zeta and all nurses in Gadsden Regional ER and SICU who treated Mr. Self with great skill and compassion. You are truly heroes and we appreciate your efforts.

The family will receive friends on Sunday at the funeral home starting at 12:30 and lasting until the time of service.
