Patsy Mathis Mayes, 81, of Gadsden, stepped from this life into the presence of Jesus, on Friday, January 10, 2014. She was at home, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Mrs. Mayes was born in Bridgeport, Alabama on September 24, 1932. She was a faithful member of James Memorial Baptist Church for more than forty-five years and a full time homemaker, who raised four children.
She was known for her beautiful smile, her loving nature and her love for the Lord. She loved her church and the JoAnn Cowart Sunday School Class. Her children, grandchildren and great granddaughters were her pride and joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Geneva Mathis, brothers Walter Mathis, Roger Mathis, Buddy Mathis; her sisters Carlene Vaughn and Bonnie Vance.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John W. Mayes, Jr., Daughters Beverly (Ragan) Godfrey, Myra (Bart) Scott; Sons Ronald (Elaine) and Carey (Katie) Mayes; Mike Bolton, David Panell; Grandchildren, Brent (Meredith) Panell, Leanne Steele, Erick (Alyson) Anderton, Jessica Mayes, Michael and Madison Bolton, Lauren, Mary Katherine and John W. Mayes, III, four precious great-granddaughters; brother William Mathis, sister Teresa Payne (Butch) Reeves and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Brent, Erick and Michael; David Panell, Mike Bolton, Darrell Reed, Steve Livingston, Ed Slaten, Robin Roberts. Honorary pallbearers are Darwood Santmier and the Joe Hall Sunday School Class.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to special caregiver Willie Ragland and associates of Amedisys Hospice Care, especially Kendra, Katie and Loretta.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 pm Monday, January 13, at Crestwood Funeral Home. The Reverends Lonnie B. Byrd and Bill Abbot will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 - 1:00 at the funeral home. -
