Our much beloved husband and father, Ken Hubbard, 67, Glencoe, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 28, 2010, after an extended battle with ALS. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2010. The Revs. Vince Whittington and Ken Casey will officiate and music will be provided by Debbie Handy. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery with Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home directing. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 43 years, Carol Garmon Hubbard; cherished daughters, Holly Hubbard and Haley (Keith) Beason; adored grandson, Owen Beason; brother, Jerry (Sue) Hubbard; sisters, Bonnie Handy, Carolyn (Pete) Peterson, and Frances Brugge; He leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. He also leaves behind students whose lives were changed and who have many Coach Hubbard stories to tell. He will be reunited in heaven with his parents, Reuben and Beatrice Hubbard; brother Charles Hubbard; father-in-law Milford Garmon Sr. and mother-in-law Wynell Garmon. Ken was born in Etowah County and was a valued member of the Glencoe community. He graduated from Glencoe High School in 1962 and served in the United States Army before earning a bachelor's and master's degrees in education from UAB. He returned to his alma mater to teach in 1972 and taught at Glencoe High for the next 25 years. He was passionate about basketball and softball. He coached the junior high boys', B-team boys', and girls' basketball teams and the girls' softball team. His teams won county and area championships. He was a transforming influence in so many lives because he not only taught the fundamentals of the games but also of life. He was also an accomplished umpire for more than 30 years. He served as ASA local association chief, Alabama Umpire-in-Chief, and umpired and headed several national tournaments. He was inducted into the ASA Alabama State Hall of Fame for umpiring and coaching a state champion fast pitch summer league team, the Gadsden Tomboys, in 1976. From teaching and softball, people all over the area and state respected and loved "Hub." He loved the Lord and his Savior, Jesus Christ and served God as a member of Glencoe First Baptist Church for more than forty years. He was honored to be a deacon and especially enjoyed visiting and serving the ladies in his Deacon Widows' Ministry. His favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:19, "And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Throughout his illness, he trusted in the Lord. He loved his family, his church, and the Glencoe community. For those who wish to honor his life, flowers will be accepted as well as donations to the Glencoe First Baptist Church building fund or The Gideons International. Pallbearers will be Sonny Kirby, Lendon Woodall, Lanny Handy, Ken McMillan, Victor Stanfield, Ron Box, Wayne Findley, and Billy Vowell. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Good Shepherd Sunday School Class and the Glencoe First Baptist Church family; colleagues from Glencoe High School and the Etowah County Alternative School; fellow softball umpires; and our friend, Dr. Ralph Wesley. Special thanks to the loving caregivers who looked after Ken so well: Jane Martin, Brenda and Larry Nunn and the staff at Almost Like Home, Angela Bledsoe, Amy Tawbush, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
