John Jediny, of Rainbow City, Alabama, passed away from this life on his 88th birthday, November 30, 2022 at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama. He was born to George and Anna Jediny on November 30, 1934 in Vrbovce, Czechoslovakia. He immigrated at 11 years old after his father's death and became a US citizen at age 19.
John served over 20 years in both the Army and Air Force attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he served in the state of Maine at a remote northern Air Force Station where he was a radar electronics technician. His mission was to assist in the early warning detection of a surprise Soviet nuclear attack on the United States.
He also served a year long tour of duty in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service as a Radar Maintenance Technician under combat conditions. His other military medals include the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Small Arms Expert Ribbon.
After retirement from the miliary, John worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Electronic Technician in the Boston area. He retired from the FAA in 2000.
John was an avid gardener and found great personal joy in growing various flowers, fruit trees and organic vegetables, generously sharing them with his neighbors and church family.
John was preceded in death by his parents George and Anna Jediny; brother Paul Jediny of Newburgh, New York; son John Joseph Jediny of Lake Worth, Florida; and daughter Anna Marie Jediny of Trenton, Maine
John is survived by his wife of nearly 38 years: Jimmie Nell Jediny; daughter: Janet Jediny of Denver, Colorado; son David Russomanno and daughter-in-law Theresa Russomanno of Carmel, Indiana; seven grandchildren: AJ (Haley) Neyland and Angel Neyland of Denver, Colorado; Evan Russomanno of Carmel, Indiana; Amanda O'Rourke and Maygen (Christopher) Miliano of Seal Cove, Maine; Renee O'Rourke of Anchorage, Alaska; Anna Lee Jediny of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation opportunity will be from
11a.m.-1p.m. Monday December 5, 2022 at Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. in the chapel and all guests are invited to share in veteran honors for John at the graveside on the same property just outside the funeral home.
