Obituary

David Barr was a dedicated Christian, loving husband, caring father, devoted friend and sup portive boss. He went to heaven early Friday morning, October 14, 2022. Although diagnosed with cancer and given only 3 to 5 years to live, he battled hard and gave his family and friends 7.5 years to treasure being with him.

He was born in Anniston, AL to Herbert and Margaret Barr onOctober 15. 1950. David graduated from the University of Alabama where he met and married Jan Haynes. They had one daughter, Laura. He served Jefferson County in the Information Services Department for 30 years, mostly as Director.

David loved spending time with family and friends. Those times usually centered around good food and witty conversations. Typically, people enjoyed his skills on the grill and smoker more than going out to restaurants.

For those who knew him best, he was a rock of encouragement and support. He was kind and believed that people should always be considerate of others. Those who loved him best teased him well and often for his passion of reading all rules and instr uctions before beginning any game or project – a process labeled "doing a David" when anyone followed his example.

David was active in many church and civic activities. He especially enjoyed helping youth develop softball and baseball skills, trying to help keep families intact through the Exchange Club Center's Prevention of Child Abuse Programs, supportinglocal and foreign missions, and personally rescuing abandoned dogs.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Margaret Barr. He is survived by his wife, Jan; their child, Laura, her husband Jason Bates and their two children, Johnny and Payton of Birmingham, AL. He also is survived by his well-loved Thomas cousins: Linda; Donald; David, Amanda and their four children; and Philip, Renessa and their two children. He also loved his wife's brother and sister-in-law, John and Karen Haynes; his nephew, Wes Haynes, and family.

David will be laid to rest at a graveside service in Forestlaw nGardens, Anniston, AL, Wednesday, October 19, at 2 pm. If you wish to honor David, please donate to a charity of your choice in David's name. Some of the charities he supported were the Humane Society, Big Oak Ranch, church and missionary donations to the First Baptist Church of Birmingham, and local food banks.

We live in a fallen world where cancer is a beast, but none of this caught God by surprise. David is celebrating in heaven with so many other wonderful people who have been waiting to welcome him home.
