Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Crestwood Chapel for Mr. J.C. Bynum, 91, Hokes Bluff, who died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012. The Revs. Bill Harbison and Alan Hudson will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge. J.C. "Jake" rejoiced in life for 91 years. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Ottolene, and family. J.C. was a lifelong resident of Etowah County, and a trusted pillar of his community. He was a very hardworking individual and respected by all. In his own words, he had "been married to the same blonde for 72 years." He was a 1940 graduate of Gadsden High School, and served in the United States Navy as a Seabee in Guam during World War II. He worked for Republic Steel for 18 years and for Liberty National Life Insurance Company for 25 years. He was past president of the Republic Steel Foreman's Club, East Gadsden Civitan Club, Gadsden Life Underwriters Association and the G Club Alumni. He was also a past noble of the I.O.O.F. 151, past member of the Masons and the Gideons. He was preceded in death by his son, William Edward Bynum; brother, W.E. "Buddy" Bynum; daughter-in-law, Brenda Ford Bynum. He is survived by his wife, Ottolene Gilmore Bynum; son, James David (Lynda) Bynum; daughter, Pat (David S.) Martin; chosen son, Tom Gilmore; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
