Obituary

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Crestwood Chapel for Glenn Benefield, 86, Gadsden, who died Oct. 2, 2012. The Rev. Bill Abbott will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct the service. Mr. Benefield was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army as a Tech Sergeant in the Pacific Theater. He had studied at University of Alabama Gadsden Center and retired from Bowman Transportation. He had been a member of James Memorial Baptist Church for 43 years and had served in various positions in the church, such as deacon, usher, greeter and audio operator. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Zoe Benefield; daughter, Angela Sims; grandchildren, Eve (Vincent) Pentecost and Nathan Sims; sister-in-law, Iva Morgan; siblings, Travis (Sue) Coker, Bobby (Patsy) Coker, Kenneth (Judy) Coker, Wallace (Sharon) Coker, Georgia Coker, Mary (Bill) Noah, Pauline (Ken) Lee, JoAnn Gray and Richard Coker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Hall's Sunday School class, Mike Burns, Kevin Morgan, Ronald Tracy, Kenneth Tidwell, Joe Hall, Bob Lowery and W.C. Murphy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the James Memorial Baptist Church Heating and Cooling Fund. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the hour of service.
