George Lamar Berry, 93, Gadsden, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Crestwood Funeral Home. Bro. Philip Elliott and Bro. Micah Williamson will officiate with burial at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home directing. Mr. Berry, known to his family and friends as "Pat," was born on Dec. 11, 1918. He was an active member and deacon of Bellevue Baptist Church and a former deacon and member of Forrest Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as R.A. leader and basketball coach. As a young man he served in the CCC in Medford, Ore., and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a machinist at Republic Steel for 43 years. Mr. Berry served for many years on the Democratic Executive Committee as well as the Democratic Women's Club. He enjoyed volunteering at Bellevue's Christian Life Center and working on the church's Grounds Committee. Mr. Berry was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George William Berry; brothers, Lafayette and Joe Berry; sisters, Martha Humphries and Jean Glenn; and grandson, Jody Randall Berry. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Eva J. Berry; son, Randy (Beverly) Berry; grandson, Chris (April) Berry; granddaughters, Heather (Nathan) Clough and Amy Berry (fianc Kyle Richey); great-grandsons, Sam Berry and Will Clough; brother, Chester (Kathy) Berry; sister, Elaine Grimes; brother-in-law, Melvin Glenn; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bellevue Baptist Church Grounds Committee or the MANNA program. Pallbearers will be Chris Berry, Nathan Clough, Kyle Richey, Mike Couch, Richard Couch, Larry Couch and Anthony Woodham. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Bellevue's Men's Adult 4 Sunday School class. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
