A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Crestwood Cemetery for Gene Story Smith, 84, who passed away Sept. 22, 2013, at his home in Southside, surrounded by family. The Rev. Dave Roberts, Chaplain, will officiate. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.Gene was a native of Tifton, GA. He was a graduate of Georgia Military College. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 35 years in management positions.Gene will be missed for his quick wit. He was a music lover and used his rich baritone voice to serve his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will be missed for his loving manner and his devotion to family. He was a longtime member of River of Life Church.Mr. Smith was the husband of Dorothy Burger Smith for 60 years. He was the son of Watson and Eldora Smith (deceased).He was the brother to Robert K. (Jean) Smith. He was the father of Mark (Ann) Smith and Kathy Fortenberry, of Gadsden. He was "Pop" to Abby and Ashley Smith of Gadsden. He was a brother-in-law to Stanley (Beulah) Burger, Audra Burger, Ann Burger and Dodie Burger.Honorary pallbearers are Dr. W.W. Sledge and staff.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Alacare Home Health, Lawley Hospice and Riverview Manna.A special thanks to Glenda Lemasters and Rev. Dave Roberts for their special care and devotion during his illness.The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:30 until the hour of service.
