Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Crestwood Chapel for Garlon "Pop" Dowdy, Glencoe, 87, who died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. Dr. Rodney Gilmore will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct the service. Mr. Dowdy was a retired truck driver with more than 30 years of service. He loved fishing; however, doting on his grandchildren was his favorite pastime. He was an Army veteran, having served his county in World War II. He was a member of Glencoe First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Marie Dowdy; brother, Bert Dowdy; and sisters, Evelyn Kirby, Doris Fleming and Betty Ingram. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Dowdy; daughters, Delane (Johnny) Flores and Dianne (Tim) McGinnis; grandchildren, Deidra (Jeffery) Cothran, Daphne (Dustin) Freeman, Adam (Jasmine) McGinnis, Laura McGinnis (Justin Walker), Mallory McGinnis; great-grandchildren, Daylon Freeman, Jesse and Luke Cothran, Coleman, Ethan and Myla McGinnis, and two more on the way; and special nieces, Gail Allgood and Sue Womack. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, great-grandsons and nephews. Special thanks to Diane Whitmore, Vicky Marble, Vicky Johnson and Southern Care Hospice. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
