Funeral Service was at 2pm Wednesday August 19 at Crestwood Chapel for Doyle W. May, age 73, Glencoe, who died Sunday August 16. Bro. Kevin Smith, Bro. Jimmy Simmons, and Bro. Blake Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery.
Mr. May was a native of Plainview, Texas and graduated from Plainview High School in May of 1954. He played football for the Plainview Bulldogs for three seasons. Mr. May then attended Texas Tech and West Texas State. Doyle was an outstanding Golden Gloves Boxer during the fifties. He received the Laverne Roach Annual Award for Athletic and Citizenship Accomplishments. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving two years in Germany. While in Germany, he threw the javelin and was the U.S. Army European Champion. After being discharged from the Army, he attended Lippert's Court Reporting School in Plainview, which led to a long career for him, primarily in Alabama. He had retired from the State of Alabama Judicial Court System where he served as a court reporter for 30 years. He received his associate degree in applied Science on May 30, 1976. Doyle was an avid walker and enjoyed working out in the gym. He was a loving husband, father, son, and brother. His first love was Christ and His Church. He studied his Bible and was always willing to help. He was a member of Glencoe Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty Hill May; Daughters Dana Bryant, Patti Mackey (Dale); Son Lance Ty May (Jennifer); Grandchildren Daniel Fulmer, Deanna Fulmer, Ashley Taylor, Dillon Mackey, Luke Mackey, Alex Benjamin, Christian May, Emmaline May, and Elizabeth May, All of Glencoe; Great Grandchildren Austin Rule of Scottsboro, and Avery Haab of Illinois; Brothers Claude May, Jr. (Ellen),of Plainview TX and Gordan May (Jan) of Canyon, TX.; Several Nieces and Nephews.
He is preceded in death by his granddaughter Liberty May, father Claude May Sr., Mother Ruby Rector May, and Nephew Scott May.
Pallbearers will be Maurice Hill, Jerry Hill, Craig Hill, Daniel Fulmer, Dale Mackey, and Denson Adkins.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Ralph Wesley and the Elders and Deacons of Glencoe Church of Christ.
The family would like to express special thanks to the nurses and aides of Amedisys Hospice.
The family received friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 until 8 pm.
