Doris Jean Adamson Jones, a woman of strong character and worth, was the third born of 14 children. She was greeted and warmly received in this life in Wetumpka on May 10, 1931, by loving and devoted parents, Mr. Charlie Barney Adamson and Mrs. Lillie Pearl Owens Adamson. She was a gift from God, as the name "Doris" means "gift" and "bountiful," and the name "Jean" implies "God is gracious." Her mother and father were again standing and waiting with God's holy entourage to receive her into eternity when she bid farewell to this life on Thursday morning, April 19, 2012 - just 20 days before her 81st birthday. Her soul rejoices! And we rejoice with her in celebration of her life journey. "Jean," as she was affectionately called by friends and family, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age. She took her role as big sister seriously. Her little sisters and brothers knew not to disrespect or disobey her as she often stepped up to fill her mother's shoes. Truly, she was a blessing, a gift from God sent down from Heaven for a special purpose. Whenever she knew that her parents were unable to provide Christmas presents or meet other needs of her younger siblings, she helped however she could. She served as a role model for her children, her younger siblings, as well as other family members and friends. Throughout her many challenging life experiences, she was a living witness that there is a caring God who loves us all. As such, she was a member of Sweet Home United Methodist Church most of her adult life. Jean was very talented and gifted in many ways. She graduated from East High School in Sylacauga. Her chosen profession in the nursing field was commensurate with her tenacious spirit of caring for others. This same loving spirit was evident in her home as she often made clothing for her family, and she enjoyed providing special holiday meals for them as well. She was the epitome of the Proverbs 31:25 woman - "strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come." During her lengthy illness, she was cared for by her children: Cedric, Darryl, Kim and their families. Her devoted son-in-law, Lovett, her granddaughter, Whitley and 3-year-old great-grandson, Trevon, often took turns relieving other members of the family. They are to be commended for their dedicated and compassionate service. Jean was married to Herman Jones Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Herman Jones Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Curtis (Ratana, "Lot") Jones of Fayetteville, N.C., Cedric (Mary) Jones, Darryl (Sandra) Jones and Kimlyn (Willie "Lovett") Jones Lovett, all of Gadsden. Also cherishing her memory is a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; one aunt; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She will be remembered for her generosity, her gentleness and her tender love and care for her family and others. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; and one sister. Surviving sisters are Charlie Mae (the late James Pope) Pope of Sylacauga, Willie D. (Eleanor) Adamson of Alta Paloma, Calif., Helen V. (the late Harvey Adams) Adams of Ringgold, Ga., Bobby Joe (Floria) Adamson of Ooltewah, Tenn., Shirley Adamson Joiner of Atlanta, Ga., Brenda J. (Gerald) Bland of Houston, Texas, and Roger Lee (Brenda) Adamson of Tulsa, Okla. The homegoing service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Sweet Home United Methodist Church with the interment service immediately following in Crestwood Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Dedric A. Houser will officiate. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. Mrs. Jones will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service. Sign Guest Book
