Donald Lewis "Donnie" Whorton, age 77, of Glencoe, Alabama, passed away on June 1, 2026. Born on November 8, 1948, in Gadsden, Alabama, his kind heart, quick wit, and sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Gadsden High School’s Class of 1968, Donnie excelled as both a tennis player and track athlete. Following high school, he served his country with honor as a Radioman Petty Officer Third Class in the United States Navy aboard the USS America, earning the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
Donnie began his professional career at Gulf State Steel before transitioning to Conwood Tobacco Company, where he worked until retirement. His strong work ethic and loyalty left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends.
Beyond his career, Donnie was an avid sports enthusiast who found joy in playing golf and cheering for Alabama Football and Braves Baseball. He enjoyed restoring antique furniture and had a passion for collecting baseball cards and coins. A history enthusiast with a love for reading and genealogy, Donnie spent countless hours researching his family’s roots. He also loved movies and the music of the 1960s.
Donnie was a member of FBC Glencoe. Most recently, he enjoyed opening his home to the student ministry for Bible study and fellowship.
Donnie is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Whorton; son Jay Whorton (Katie) ; siblings Sandra Duncan (Johnny), Joe Whorton (Kim), Lurae Morgan, and Harry Whorton; sisters-in-law Becky Nelson (Mike), Mary Whorton, and Diane Whorton; mother-in-law Lois Bartlett, close family Daniel, Staci, Abbi, and Chloe Henson and Shane Elsberry; lifelong friends Randy Loveman and Bill Royal; along with numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Kay and Betty Whorton; siblings Betty Kay Beddingfield, Cam Whorton, and David Whorton; father-in-law Clifford Bartlett; and brothers-in-law Mike Elsberry and David Morgan.
The family would like to thank ProHealth for the excellent care they provided, especially Donnie's two favorites, Kimberly Glass and Emily Jenkins.

A celebration of life will be held at The Whorton’s home, 306 4th Ave East in Glencoe, on Sunday, June 28. The family will receive friends in their home from 2:00-4:00pm with a short memorial service, officiated by Cooper Gomez, to follow.
