Funeral Service will be at 1pm Tuesday, December 19, at Crestwood Chapel for Dean Newkirk Kaplan, age 83, who passed away December 16, 2023. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. Pastor Harry Whitt will officiate. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct services.

Mrs. Kaplan was a longtime resident of Gadsden and a graduate of Etowah High School. She married and moved to Chicago. While there she worked as a substitute teacher in the public school system, and later worked as a bank teller at Chase Bank. During this time she became single until she met and married Julian Kaplan. She and Julian returned to Arab, Alabama. After Mr. Kaplan passed she returned to Attalla and lived at Cherry Creek Village where she met many new friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Julian Kaplan; son Russell "Rusty" Sims; and parents Bertha and Ed Newkirk.

Mrs. Kaplan is survived by her sons Jeff, Jerry, and Mark Sims; two grandchildren; brother Jerry Newkirk; several cousins; and other extended relatives.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff of Gadsden Health and Rehab for the care and kindness shown to Mrs. Kaplan.
