Obituary

Mrs. Jean Brooks Callan, 101, of Gadsden, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home.

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on May 18, 1924, Jean was a teacher for many years and helped establish and run a school at College Heights Baptist Church, where she served as director. She was an artist who loved to travel and was a great cook, gardener, and avid reader. She cherished her time at both College Heights Baptist Church and later at Macedonia Baptist Church in Hokes Bluff. Jean could often be found reading her Bible and praying, as she faithfully lived out her Christian beliefs.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Deana (Jeff) Thacker; son, Richard (Cheri) Brooks; and son-in-law, Clark Lancaster. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Scott (Krystal) Lancaster, Brooke Lancaster, Kyle Thacker, Lauren (Colton) Harden, Leah (Patrick) Patterson, Graham Brooks, and Hannah (Britton) Garrett; and great-grandchildren: Carson, Jackson, Mack, Arden, Carter, Adrian, Kaleigh, Arabella, Coralyn, Bella Kate, and Bentley, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Josie Thompson; her brothers, Jack, Rob, Ray, and Bill Thompson; and her daughter, Linda Brooks Lancaster.

Special thanks to Enhabit Home Health; her nurses and caregivers, Kayla, Jennifer, Lori, Courtney, and Fred (Chaplain); and Dr. Reiland for the wonderful care they provided.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home, located at 2209 E. Broad Street, Gadsden, Alabama 35903. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., with chapel service at 2:00 p.m, followed by a graveside service for family.

Pallbearers will be Scott Lancaster, Kyle Thacker, Graham Brooks, Britton Garrett, Patrick Patterson, and Colton Harden. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Thacker and Clark Lancaster.

Jean loved everyone she met and wanted all to know Jesus. She was a Proverbs 31 woman and surely heard the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
