Funeral services will be at 2p.m. Saturday, January 14th, at Crestwood Funeral Home for Charles Vernon Burgess, 92, of Gadsden who passed away Thursday, January 12, 2023. Lauil Thompson will officiate. Burial at Crestwood Cemetery.

Charles was a native of Southside and lived his adult life in Gadsden. He was a student at Southside High School where he also played football. He served in Marine Corps from October 1950 to May 1952. He was employed with Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 40 years as a truck tire builder until he retired in 1992. After retirement his primary hobby was farming. He sold vegetables out of the back of his truck on Paden Rd every year and truly loved talking to everyone that stopped to see him. He attended Paden Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He loved spending time with his grandkids and loving wife, Jenny, of 62 years.

Charles is survived by his son David Burgess (Michelle); grandsons, Jeremy Murphree (Destiny) and Cody Burgess (Miranda); great-grandsons, Henry Burgess and Jaxton Chandler; great-granddaughters, Ollie Murphree and Hensley Chandler; brothers, Randal Burgess and Mack Burgess; sister, Sue Delashaw.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia West Burgess; father, Dennis Evans Burgess; mother, Ethel Brittain Burgess; brothers, Herbert Burgess, Dennis Burgess, Lewis Burgess and Jim Burgess; sisters, Thelma Clements, Ruby Snyder and Vera Mae Lankford; granddaughter, Ashley Murphree.

Family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2p.m. before the service.
