Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Crestwood Chapel for Mrs. Barbara Dowdy, 64, Gadsden, who passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016. The Rev. Scott Hassell will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge of services.
Mrs. Dowdy was a 1970 graduate of Gadsden and later attended Alabama Technical School before entering the banking business with Alabama City Bank, later becoming SouthTrust Bank. She and her husband Bill owned and operated Dowdy Business Equipment for several years.
She was an avid Alabama football fan and an even bigger fan of Elvis. She was a longtime member of V.F.W. Post 2760. She was a loving wife, friend and special aunt to numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, E.V. and Vivian Carter; sister, Kathryn Pruitt; brother in-law, Rohney Dowdy; and nephew Mark Mitchell.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Dowdy, with whom she loved to travel; stepson, Keith Dowdy; brother, Harry (Jeanette) Carter; sisters, Sue (Franklin) Walker, Ruby Nell (Butch) Ramsey; and a host of nieces and nephews. She also leaves her Pappion dog, Patty Dowdy, who she treated like a child.
Pallbearers will be Evan Wildman, Joshua Parker, Byron Mayo, Dillan Carter, Bill Mitchell and Jeremy Dowdy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Wildman, Tony Dowdy, Scott Dowdy, Marty Walker and Danny Parker.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to St. Jude or the Boys and Girls Clubs of Gadsden.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
